Timing Belt or Chain Checker by Registration: UK Guide

Can a registration tell you whether a car has a timing belt or chain?

Often it can narrow the answer down very quickly, but registration is not always the final piece of evidence. Manufacturers can use several engines in the same model and year. A facelift, power output, hybrid system, gearbox or engine-code change can alter the timing arrangement even when the badge on the boot looks identical.

That is why EDH does not classify a vehicle from a broad rule such as “all EcoBoost”, “all EcoBlue”, “all PureTech” or “everything after 2023”. We give priority to the exact engine code and confirmed application wherever it is available.

Wet belt, dry timing belt and timing chain: what is the difference?

Timing system How it works What owners need to know
Wet timing belt A toothed belt runs inside engine oil. Correct oil and service history matter; belt degradation can contaminate the oil system.
Dry timing belt / cambelt A conventional belt runs outside the engine oil. It still has a vehicle-specific replacement schedule, but it is not a belt-in-oil system.
Timing chain A metal chain drives the camshaft timing. It is not a wet timing belt, although some engines can still have a separate internal belt for another drive.

Why the engine code matters

Two cars can share the same model name and engine capacity while using different timing architecture. Ford is a good example. EDH has confirmed older 1.0 EcoBoost engine codes such as SFJA and M1JE as wet cam timing-belt applications, while other Ford EcoBoost engines in the wider range use a dry belt or timing chain. The same principle applies to PureTech engines: several non-hybrid EB2-family codes are wet-belt applications, while later hybrid applications can use a chain.

This is also why an online search for a model and year can produce contradictory answers. A search result may describe a different power output or engine code from the car in front of you.

Does a timing chain mean there is no wet belt anywhere in the engine?

Not always. Some engines use a chain for camshaft timing but have a separate belt-in-oil drive elsewhere, while other engines use a dry cam timing belt plus another internal drive. This is why EDH records the cam timing type and any separately confirmed oil-pump drive instead of reducing every engine to a single generic label.

Can I use the registration checker instead of the manufacturer’s service schedule?

No. The checker is designed to identify the likely timing architecture and flag applications that need confirmation. Replacement intervals and maintenance decisions should still be checked against the exact vehicle and manufacturer/service information. Where evidence is conflicting, we would rather return manual confirmation than guess.

What should I do after I know the timing system?

If the result indicates a wet belt, establish whether there is reliable replacement history and whether the vehicle-specific schedule has been met. If the result indicates a conventional dry belt, check the cambelt schedule. If it indicates a timing chain, follow the correct servicing requirements and investigate relevant symptoms rather than replacing a belt that is not fitted.
