Is a wet belt the same as a timing belt?
A wet belt is a type of timing belt, but it is not the same as a traditional dry timing belt.
A timing belt controls the timing between the crankshaft and camshaft, helping the engine valves and pistons move correctly. If the timing system fails, the engine can suffer serious damage.
Dry timing belt vs wet belt
A traditional timing belt usually runs outside the engine oil and is protected by covers. It is often easier to inspect and replace.
A wet belt, also known as a belt-in-oil system, runs inside the engine and is exposed to engine oil. This design can help reduce friction and noise, but it also means the belt depends heavily on the correct oil and servicing.
What about timing chains?
A timing chain is different again. Chains are metal and also run inside the engine, usually lubricated by oil. Some vehicles use timing chains instead of belts, but chains can still have their own issues depending on the engine.
The three common timing systems
- Dry timing belt – rubber belt outside engine oil
- Wet belt – rubber belt running inside oil
- Timing chain – metal chain inside the engine
The difficulty is that many drivers do not know which system their vehicle uses. Even vehicles with the same engine size may differ depending on year, fuel type and engine code.
