“Wet belt” is often used as if it describes one component, but some engines can contain more than one belt running in engine oil. The cam timing belt and a separate oil-pump drive belt do different jobs and should be identified separately.
What does the wet cam timing belt do?
The cam timing belt synchronises the crankshaft and camshaft timing so the valves operate at the correct point in the engine cycle. On a belt-in-oil design, that toothed belt runs inside the engine and is exposed to engine oil.
What does the oil-pump belt do?
A separate oil-pump belt drives the engine’s oil pump on applications that use this architecture. It can also run in oil, but it is not the cam timing belt. Its job is to maintain oil circulation rather than directly synchronise the camshaft timing.

Can an engine have a chain and still contain a belt in oil?
Potentially, yes. That is why EDH stores the cam timing system and oil-pump drive as separate fields. A customer asking “does it have a wet belt?” often means the main cam timing belt, but a separate internal belt can still matter for maintenance and repair.
Why does this distinction matter when comparing quotes?
A quote for the main timing belt may not automatically include a separate oil-pump belt. Likewise, describing an engine as “mixed” without explaining the actual components can confuse customers. A useful quote should identify which belts are being replaced and what oil-system work is included.
Ford examples
Ford’s component information for a 1.0L EcoBoost service engine describes separate engine-oil-lubricated belts for the camshafts and oil pump. Ford’s EcoBlue overview also describes belt-in-oil technology for camshaft and oil-pump drive belts. Exact application still matters, so EDH exposes these drives separately in the engine database.
