Peugeot & Citroën PureTech Wet Belt Problems: Engine Guide

Last reviewed: 31 August 2026

Peugeot and Citroën PureTech wet-belt problems are widely discussed because many 1.2-litre EB2-family petrol engines use a belt-in-oil cam timing system. The design itself is only part of the story: service history, correct oil specification, exact engine code and whether the vehicle is a later hybrid application all affect the advice.

What is a PureTech wet belt?

On the relevant engines, the toothed cam timing belt runs inside the engine oil. If belt material degrades, particles can contaminate the oil and may restrict the oil pick-up. That can create lubrication problems in addition to the normal timing risk associated with a deteriorating timing belt.

Which PureTech engines use a wet timing belt?

EDH’s confirmed rules include a number of non-hybrid 1.2 PureTech EB2-family identifiers as belt-in-oil applications, including EB2, EB2ADTS, EB2ADTD, EB2ADT, EB2DT, EB2DTS, EB2F and EB2FA where the exact application matches.

They are found across a range of Peugeot, Citroën, DS and later Stellantis/Vauxhall vehicles. Typical Peugeot and Citroën enquiries include the 208, 2008, 308, 3008, C3, C3 Aircross, C4 and C4 Cactus.

Why “all newer PureTech engines have a chain” is unsafe

There has been a genuine change toward chain-driven later hybrid PureTech applications, but registration year alone cannot be used as the switch. EDH has confirmed newer non-hybrid EB2ADTS applications that still use a wet timing belt. Conversely, a later petrol-electric application with an engine such as EB2LTDH2 / HPY is chain-driven for cam timing.

The correct hierarchy is: exact engine code and application first, then fuel/hybrid status, capacity, year and model as supporting evidence.

Key point: “PureTech” is a marketing family, not a single timing-system specification.

What causes concern on wet-belt PureTech engines?

  • Belt material deteriorating in the engine-oil environment
  • Incorrect oil specification or poor service history increasing uncertainty
  • Debris entering the lubrication system
  • Restricted oil pick-up flow where contamination becomes significant
  • Unverified replacement history on an ageing or higher-mileage vehicle

PureTech warning signs

Oil-pressure warnings, engine-management warnings, rough running, loss of power or unusual engine noise should be assessed. They are not exclusive to wet-belt failure, so diagnosis matters. Some vehicles can also have no obvious early warning, which is why prevention should not be based solely on symptoms.

See our detailed Peugeot and Citroën wet-belt warning-sign guide.

Can you check a PureTech wet belt and say it is fine?

A visual assessment cannot guarantee the complete belt’s remaining life or prove the oil system is clean. The more useful questions are: is this exact engine a wet-belt application, what does the vehicle-specific maintenance information require, has replacement already been documented, and has the correct oil/service regime been followed?

What if the car is a Vauxhall with a 1.2 engine?

Selected Vauxhall models use Stellantis 1.2 petrol engines from the same broad family. Some are wet-belt applications, while exact later variants can differ. See our Vauxhall wet-belt guide.

How EDH identifies the correct application

Our checker starts with the registration-led vehicle information and applies engine-specific rules. Where an exact engine code is known, it takes priority over broad model or year assumptions. If the available evidence conflicts, the system can return a manual-confirmation result instead of forcing an answer.

Replacement and workshop support

If the engine is confirmed as a wet-belt application and the replacement history is missing or the vehicle is due, EDH can advise on the correct replacement work. The job can involve more than fitting a belt, particularly where oil-system contamination or a separate internal drive needs attention. See our wet belt replacement service and cost guide.
