Why oil changes matter on wet belt engines
Wet belt engines rely heavily on clean, correct engine oil. Because the timing belt runs inside the oil, poor oil maintenance can affect the belt itself. This makes oil changes more important than many drivers realise.
Wet belts need the correct oil
On a standard dry timing belt engine, the belt sits outside the engine oil. On a wet belt engine, the belt is constantly exposed to oil. If the oil is old, contaminated or the wrong specification, the belt may deteriorate more quickly.
When wet belts begin to break down, small fragments can enter the oil system. These particles may collect in the oil pickup strainer, restrict oil flow and increase the risk of serious engine damage.
Good servicing can reduce risk
This is why regular servicing is essential. Following the correct oil specification is just as important as changing it on time. Cheap or incorrect oil can cause long-term problems, even if the car seems to run normally at first.
